Background
Nortel is a recognized leader in delivering communications capabilities for both service provider and enterprise networks. Connecting over 30,000 employees in more than 255 locations across 60 countries, along with over 20,000 external partners from 800 companies, Nortel's own internal network is one of the largest and most robust enterprise network infrastructures in the world.
Customer Need
During a typical month, the network handles approximately 2,000 terabytes of data traffic (including millions of emails and secure instant messages), 30 million minutes of voice and video calls, 20 million minutes of audio conferencing and 100 live web casts. Nortel needed to evolve the network and information technology to enhance workforce productivity, improve business agility and drive down companywide communications costs. The end goal was to move towards full applications convergence to support Nortel's overall strategy of 'Business Made Simple' for customers, partners, suppliers and employees.

Deploy Nortel's own unified communications technology in a phased approach that combines the capabilities of
IP telephony
with collaborative software applications, including IP-enabling the voice network with its
Communication Server 1000
and adding
IP Phones
; equipping mobile users and all employees with collaboration tools through the
Multimedia Communication Server 5100
; bundling applications and driving full application convergence.
